Osceola, Arkansas
Industrial: First of its kind: E-Waste Recycling
32,000-square-foot - 1 Story

BlueOak Arkansas is the nation's first urban mining facility and provides a vital domestic solution for electronic waste ("e-waste") recycling. The one-story, 32,000-square-foot e-waste recycling facility situated on a 30-acre site in Osceola, Arkansas achieved LEED Silver level certification in 2016. The mining refinery extracts high-valued metals such as gold, silver, copper and palladium from e-waste. Being a first of its kind facility posed significant challenges in meeting LEED prerequisites and credits. With no facility to use as a benchmark, HLMS Sustainability Solutions and its engineering arm, Brandywine Consulting, worked closely with the U.S. Green Building Council to asses their rigorous protocols to establish a comparative baseline for energy modeling. Features:
  • 80% operational efficiency
  • 44% optimized energy performance through LED lighting and process load reductions
  • 40% reduction in water use through extremely high efficient flush fixtures
  • 95% construction waste diversion from landfill
  • 30% recycled content and 39% regionally sourced materials in construction
